: an oily fatty acid CH3(CH2)7COOH found especially in fusel oil and rancid fats, obtained in the form of esters especially from the leaves of pelargoniums and related plants, and usually made synthetically along with azelaic acid by oxidation of oleic acid — called also nonanoic acid
